The Fall Reset: How to Support Your Body Through Seasonal Transition

Fall is my second favorite season.
There's something about that first cool morning that just settles me. Coffee on the swing, sweater weather, fires in the evening. The holidays starting to flicker on the horizon. The yard getting its final cleanup, the garden going to rest. Everything beginning to slow down and turn inward.
Fall feels like your favorite blanket. Like coming home.
And energetically, that's exactly what it is.
Every season carries its own energy, and fall is no different. There's a grounding quality to it, a natural invitation to slow down after the heat and busyness of summer. My patients feel it too. This time of year they tend to come in calmer, a little more settled. There's a small respite between summer and the holidays, and the body seems to know it's there.
That said, the change of seasons also brings something I see every single year without fail.
I call it batman neck.
It usually shows up as a sharp, severe pain in the neck and trapezius that comes on overnight. People wake up and can't turn their head. The muscle is locked down like a vice grip. My working theory is that the hot and cold fluctuations of the transitional weather cause the muscles to overreact, compressing the accessory nerve that runs up the neck and pulling the levator scapula into a painful spasm.
I treat a lot of batman neck in the fall. And in the spring too, when the same temperature swings happen in reverse.
The moral of the story is that your body feels the seasonal shift even when you're not paying attention to it. The question is whether you're going to support it through the transition or just wait and see what breaks down.
Here's what I actually recommend for a fall reset.
Get outside for walks while the weather is still inviting. The combination of movement, cool air, and natural light does something for the nervous system that nothing else quite replicates. Let the season work on you.
Start incorporating bone broth. Your gut takes a hit during the holidays and getting ahead of it now is one of the kindest things you can do for your body. Warm, nourishing, simple.
Slow down before you have to. Fall is a natural time to come inward, and if you fight that pull you'll feel it. Build in stillness. Sit with your morning coffee instead of rushing past it. Let there be quiet.
Meditate, journal, do some yoga or breathwork. These aren't just wellness trends. They're ways of checking in with yourself before the holiday season pulls you in every direction. Fall is the perfect time to get grounded so you have something steady to stand on when things get busy.
And if you wake up one morning unable to turn your head, come see me. Batman neck is very treatable and you don't have to suffer through it.
The body is always responding to its environment. Fall is an invitation to respond back with intention. To rest a little, nourish a little, and prepare yourself not just for winter but for everything the next few months will ask of you.
You deserve to enter the holidays feeling grounded, not already depleted.
